Interference from the laptop on the same desk? switch that laptop's wireless card off... no.
The affected computer is set to "ad-hoc only" ? Check the settings... no.
The affected laptop is american, and the network is operating on a European channel? Checked 192.168.1.1 to find the router settings page, default admin username and password found on the net, channel changed from 13 to 11, and voila. Internet fixed :)
